Kim Gunnels – Facilitator
Calling Texas home for the last 19 years, 5 in El Paso and the last 15 in Plano, Kim is originally from the Southeast and earned her B.S in Biology from Auburn University. All of her extended family are still in Georgia and she goes back to visit at least twice a year.
She has been teaching science in Plano for 13 years: first at Bowman, then Renner, and finished spring semester 2013 at Rice. While at Renner, Kim was team leader, science department head, teacher of the year, STEM Award Finalist for the district, and given the Spirit of Renner award by the students. Kim has served on the middle school curriculum writing team for five years and has helped develop the 7th grade science curriculum. Passionate about how students learn, Kim loves to be innovative and creative in the classroom to engage, excite and enthuse her students. Encouraging students to be confident and take risks to learn to be both independent and collaborative problem solvers is her goal.
Kim has been married to Mike for 25 years, and they have 2 children: Michael, who is a graduate of SMU with a biomedical engineering degree, and Mallory, who is at Texas A&M pursuing a degree in nutrition. Kim and Mike are entertained by their dachshund, Lilly, and their two cats, Abigail and Bingley. Kim loves to attend exercise classes, power walk, read, go to the movies, and eat great meals with family and friends!
